I was interested to see this pub, as it appears on Camra's inventory of historic pub interiors. It was the first one I called into on my way into town for the evening, a short walk from the camp site at the rugby club. There were two or three customers, one playing on a gambling machine, which made a bit of a noise. I looked at the various keg taps to see what was on offer. Seeing Old Speckled Hen I asked for a half, but it's no longer stocked as it didn't sell (though the beer's roundel on the tap is still lit up). There's no heavy on: same story, I guess, so I went for the McEwans 70/-, which is a poor beer. Any attempt at conversation was soon stymied by the arrival of a regular, who was greeted by a blast of heavy metal rock music from the juke box (I guess the landlord flicked a switch when the guy entered), soon followed by a noisy jackpot and equally noisy celebrations from the betting man. The interior of the pub is nothing special, just a traditional Scottish bar which was last refurbished and decorated 50 years ago, but a rarity for all that.
