Another CAMRA Heritage Inventory listing in town, ** this time, up a narrow alley off the pedestrian precinct which certainly gives you a sense of character and history. In terms of where to sit it's all about the wood panelled wee snug to the left as you enter, via a sliding door. I was lucky to get in while it was quiet and had it to myself. Two hidden local ales at the main bar/dining area partially hidden by set of roofing slates (see pic) with very unusual pump handles (cedarwood?), my Five Kingdoms McGregor's Mild was a bit long in the tooth but drinkable (NBSS 2.5). Free comedy watching the fall-out of the whisky vault audit, with the long-serving/suffering barmaid being the only person who really seemed to have a handle on proceedings. Anyway, this one should be towards the top of the list – but get there in the downtime between lunch and dinner.

An ancient pub with Burns associations, looks old outside but inside is one of the better class of establishments in Dumfries, no neds. The best part for old codgers like myself is the small snug by the entrance, the lounge bar is nice enough but more like a dining room. It is all matchboard walls in dark varnish with stained glass to one side and pictures on the other. A short counter is home to a horseshoe of standard kegs and three hand pulls of unusual design, there is also a large (200 odd) range of malts. The staff wear black trews and shirts topped off with a tartan waistcoat and the service is good but restaurant style.

Room to left and long room to the right with the bar at its start. Two hand pumps, one on, but weak strength. Rest usual keg rubbish.
