I remember visiting this place around fifteen or so years ago when it was a cosy carpeted bar with good beer and an emphasis on food. It's been given the "modern" treatment with the exception of the small area on the left as you enter which is still recognisable as a pub rather than a restaurant. It's all wooden floors and set out for dining with low level lighting so you may as well be in Islington Green or Hoxton rather than a sleepy village in North Wales. Another annoying thing I noticed was that there were some rather new looking enamel advertising plates for Guinness, Whitbread Tankard, Mackeson and Skol International Lager on one of the walls. Who is that supposed to impress?
The bar area is set in what appears to be a cave. Unfortunately the barman was not a troglodyte but a six foot something young lad who must have a permanent headache from banging his head on the roof and sides of the cave.
There were four hand pumps and despite the presence of Llyn, Conwy and Purple Moose drip mats on the bar offered a really boring selection with one unused, a rugby themed beer from Thwaites, Greene King IPA and Shepherd Neame Amber Ale (£3.30). I went for the Amber Ale which although expensive for the area was in very good nick and saves this place from getting a really dismal score.

Quinno _ left this review about Golden Fleece Inn

The other pub in Tremadog which is a sprightly 10 minutes walk from Porthmadog BR. It’s a quaint little hamlet that probably existed as the ‘town’ before the advent of slate mining brought about the development of the harbour settlement. This is a two-bar pub with a snug to the left (though less snug than small room with seating for about 10 people and a dog) and there is a room to the rear which was, oddly, a restaurant-cum-disco which looked a bit foreboding. The main lounge to the right where we sat felt like a grotto, festooned with hops hanging from ceiling, a large crackling fire, candles in egg-shaped holders, with the bar area located in a brick arch. With lights dimmed it really was quite atmospheric, less the rather jarring piped music. Busier than the Union opposite, there were individual seating areas with some little booths (one had a Wrexham Lager-monickered glass top divider) but everyone was packed in close. Three ales on the bar here (2x Purple Moose and, unusually cask M&B Mild); my Moose was good but I was less sure about the mild though having never tried it I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt...I’d be tempted to dock them a point for serving all my ales in a Carling glass however. Mrs Quinno’s hot chocolate came with lemon biscuits so she was pleased. Not sure what the provenance of the Lawrence of Arabia picture was about. All in all this was an enjoyable stop and I’d be happy to troop out this way again if I was in Porthmadog to sample it.
