Now in the same ownership as Little Critters brewery, three of whose beers feature on the bar. The fourth hand pump had Ge'thi'sen Outdooerz, also locally brewed (who'd have guessed, with a name like that) at Sheffield Brewery Co. I tried the Malty Python, an English IPA, and Shire Horse, a best bitter. Both were good quality beers, well kept and well served too. The barman had time for a chat and was friendly and knowledgeable. Although this pub has been opened out inside too much for my taste, the exterior is still a fine example of its type and the beer is worth any extra effort involved in getting here.

Will Larter left this review about The West End

A student pub, as might be expected from its position at the heart of Sheffield University. That's not meant to imply that non-students are not welcome, or that you can't get a decent drink here. Far from it.

When I arrived quite late this evening there was a disco going on and the bar was almost deserted. The music, coming from another room, was sufficiently muffled to be tolerable and also quite difficult to identify, until the almost inevitable "All Right Now" came on.

The main room (I didn't venture any further) is a large space stretching either side of the central entrance, with the bar counter to the right. This is an old Tetleys house, and there are the remains of some interesting features, including a rather grand fireplace, whose chimney breast is now adorned by an eclectic collection of clocks (all showing different times). The chairs and tables are similarly varied, and there's a comfortable, almost homely feel to the place.

In contrast, when I attempted to get a pint here a few weeks back, the place was rammed with what I took to be several hockey teams, or at any rate an overwhelming number of athletically clad young women with large sticks in their hands. The queue at the bar was three deep, and they were all much taller, stronger and thirstier than me, so I beat a hasty retreat. On this latest occasion, however, I was able to get an unrestricted view of the three hand pumps, which were serving two Theakstons beers - Lightfoot and Old Peculier, plus Caledonian Flying Scotsman. I tried a pint of the latter, and it was well kept, promptly and efficiently served, and not unreasonable at £2.70 for a pint.

Well worth a visit at the right time, perhaps as an interlude between the University Arms and the Francis Newton, but be prepared to agree that discretion is the better part of valour - a pint is just not worth dying for.
