Large square drinking barn, rammed on a Saturday night as you’d expect. Square servery in the front middle of the place, hand pumps on the front face plus loads of kegs on the others. An interesting mix of beers but the crowding doesn’t improve the drinking experience. Hen and stag party country at the weekend.

Part of a chain, this is a large drinking barn housed in a fine old building,at least from the exterior.Inside there are ranks of high refectory tables, some seating booths to the side and a rear section with worn bench seating and a divide from the main body of the pub.Loos upstairs. As with other HoS's the real ale taps are opposite the main entrance ,the oblong island bar has keg taps on both sides.Insufficient staff to cope with busy periods in a negative,as was the very loud muzak and multiple flatscreens showing various live football on my Saturday afternoon visit.
It's in the GBG due to the range of ale options which on my trip were Camerons Strongarm and Motorhead Road Crew,Abbeydale Through the Hopback Mosaic (NBSS 2.5),Brew York Juice Forsyth,Bristol Beer Factory Notorious,Yorkshire Heart Quaffer,Track Brewing Sonoma,Abbeydale Moonshine (NBSS 3) along with Old Rosie cider.
There are far better genuine pubs nearby ,I'm surprised the local CAMRA branch feel this noisy venue is worthy of a GBG entry.Maybe a case of quantity of ale rather than quality.

Brainy Pool left this review about The Head of Steam
very loud, very busy city centre pub with pretty good food and live sports on TV. a typical Head of Steam selection of 9 ales and a cider. Plastic glasses were a real downer- but I suppose this was enforced by the police, as the pub was rammed with Sheffield United fans drowning their sorrows and a few buoyant Forest fans. The 70s pop soundtrack from the DJ was also far too loud. I wouldn’t bother again unless it was a quiet midweek visit.
