Not normally the sort of pub I would venture into on a matchday, being so close to a football ground. However, we had a little time and we'd spotted the Ossett Brewery signs on the outside and decided to have a swift one before our midweek match at Elland Road.

4 handpulls were dispensing Yorkshire Blonde, Silver King, White Rat & Butterley into plastic glasses. Being so close to kick off, service was prompt and there weren't as many people hanging around as if we would have gone in 20-30 minutes earlier. So, we managed to have a fairly pleasant drink to keep us going.

There are a couple of nicely appointed rooms and I have to say that this place was much better inside than how I anticipated it to be, having only walked past it along the road to and from the ground for many years. I doubt away fans are particularly welcomed with open arms in here and as a pub in a city with many fine pubs, it's fairly average. But for a pub next to a football ground, it's not a bad choice at all.

It was very busy at the time of my visit: not very surprising as I was among a crowd of over 16 thousand attending a Leeds Rhinos game at the stadium across the road. I could see numerous hand pumps but most of them were without pump clips. Some Osset beers were listed on a blackboard, and I had a half of their 1919 Peacock 4% in a plastic drinking vessel, which is apparently normal for match days. What must it be like for Leeds United home games? I guess I'll never know. The beer was nothing special, but at least there was no exploitation or profiteering involved, as I was charged £1.70 (cheaper than the city centre)and the frothy beer was topped up without prompting.

It has been reported that the lease of The Old Peacock, opposite the LUFC ground, has been taken over by Ossett Brewery. The pub is currently undergoing a major refurb and should be open by the start of the new season. Nine real ales are promised. Should be good news for football fans...assuming you can actually get through the door.
