Another busy pub - they all seemed to be well used along this road! Can't recall what I had to drink in here but I did watch some of the football!

A small, traditional pub, on the edge of the city-centre, nestled away amongst a terrace of shops and take-aways. The interior has a stone flagged main room, which is effectively divided in two by the entrance. There is also, a small side room off the corridor and a small area to the rear of the bar. Décor and fittings are very traditional and to a good standard. There is also an enclosed patio, with benches, to the rear.

Although there were four hand pumps available, only three were in use during my visit. On offer were: Theakston’s ‘XB’, ‘Hobgoblin’ and John Smith’s. The ‘Hobgoblin’ was decent enough without being outstanding, although the pub is apparently Casque Mark accredited. The young barmaid that served me was friendly and welcoming.

Piped music seemed to be the norm, with some eclectic combinations. I can honestly say I’ve never heard Boney M’s ‘Rasputin’ followed by Pink Foyd’s ‘Comfortably Numb’ before! There were also several TV’s tuned to the racing channel, with handfuls of Tote slips scattered around the tables, perhaps hinting at the hardcore clientele. To be fair there was also a small ‘after work’ crowd drinking at the bar. They provided some early evening buzz, but overall the atmosphere was quite muted.

In short, it’s not an unpleasant pub and I would possibly call again if in the area. However, I certainly wouldn’t make a special journey to drink there.
