Art Deco, multi roomer with an octagonal lobby leading to rooms in all directions.

I timed it wrong (and was warned). Dont go just before Halifax are at home - rammed with football fans but did start emptying out as KO approached.

Stopped me from properly exploring and taking photos, but as the only traditional pub in the GBG2024, I'm bound to come back if I am ever in town.

On the edge of town, not far from the station this is an absolute must visit.A fine brick exterior gives way to an outstanding art deco interior one of the best I've ever seen. The bar is to the left of a quadrant ,beautifully picked out by mosaic tiling off which are three rooms and a corridor to two further rear rooms. The two front rooms are wood panelled, with immaculate green leather bench seating and I will forgive the coal affect gas fires which were most welcome on a cold day.Original features abound,in a classic style.
The two rear rooms are smaller but also traditional with the one of the right including a darts throw.
Owned by Osset Brewery ,the ale line up on my Wednesday visit was their Silver King,Ossetian,Half Moon,Dark Masquerade,Butterly,Yorkshire Blonde and a perfect White Rat (NBSS 5) with guests Long Moor Pale and Small World Thunderbridge Stout.Great line up.
I don't often give full marks but this pub so deserves it. The barmaid was very friendly as were the other customers,it's a joy to behold and next time I'm in for a very long session.Perfect in every sense.

Amazing Art Deco refit pub (fitted by Websters in 1932) - unspoilt. Enter to an octagonal mosaic floored bar area with five rooms leading off; each one has its own character and many of the doors retain their original metal signage. As noted below, the ceiling in this area has been painted Trompe L'oeil with a blue sky, clouds and three pigeons, around the perimeter. They've even made sure to get period art in as well. Listed by CAMRA as an interior of National Importance. Owned by Ossett, five of theirs were on over eight pumps, with a couple of Rudgate guests. The Blonde and Voodoo were a little bit ‘first of the day’ but quite drinkable (NBSS 3 and 3). A range of cold bar snacks are available, so I went for a chilli scotch egg. Half a dozen classic codger locals queuing up with me outside for the 3pm opening time and I ended-up sitting with a couple of comedy old boys in the front right room who were getting stuck into the quiz in the back of the weird pub paper this area has. No music, just atmosphere. GBG'22 listed. A truly fantastic place, which everyone who likes pubs should visit at least once. Allow plenty of time for your visit because you won’t want to leave after one, that is for sure. 9.5
