Ethelred The Unsteady left this review about The Old Ship Inn

If any of you fine ladies and gentlemen should find yourselves at the Holiday Inn at Brighouse, then you might chance a walk to the town centre.

You will be rewarded for your intrepidness, by the availability of the Old Ship, the amenable qualities of which are variously but fully described by posters below.

Brighouse is in Yorkshire. I was standing in a supermarket checkout queue not far from here, behind a couple in their eighties. As each item was scanned, the tall, more-than-usually upright husband demanded “how much is that?” and “what does that cost?”, and so on. “Oh, you’ll have to excuse him” said the wife, “he’s a Yorkshireman through and through”.

As they walked away, and more-or-less thinking aloud, I spoke to the checkout operator. “It’s odd, isn’t it?” I remarked to her, “but I’ve never heard anyone described as a Gloucestershireman through and through, nor as every inch a Worcestershireman”,

On hearing this the man stiffened and returned. “You want to watch what you say. I’m a professionally-trained killer” he warned.

I thanked him for letting me know, but reassured him that I would continue to speak freely yet politely to whomever I chose.

Subject to that implied caveat, enjoy your visit to the Old Ship.

It usually has a selection of quite diverse ales, and tasters are on offer, along with interesting discussion on the point from knowledgeable staff.

I've not eaten there for some time, but the lunches were a delight last time that I did.

I give it a fulsome eight-out-of-ten.

The Old Ship Inn is a decent looking pub with a black and white frontage.
Once inside the front room is L shaped and bare boarded, there is a stone floor, the seating is bench type and small stools, there was a TV showing music videos which i like to watch, there is a separate room to the rear right which has a pool table in it.
There were three real ales on the bar,i had a drink of Cross Bay Sunset which went down very well, the other beers were Cross Bay Zenith and Slightly Foxed Urban Fox.
I thought this was a decent pub with some good beers on the bar.

A Tudor looking frontage leads inside to two rooms with strange, muddy grey decor. The front room is sort of a lounge, the rear one has a pool table. The furniture is eclectic to say the least, some of it is downright weird. 5 handpumps including one real cider. My pint of Bosuns Bunny Boiler was in decent nick, served by a disinterested barman who wanted to get back to talking to a couple of regulars. I really didn't warm to this place, although the beer was decent enough. I'd give it another go though.
