A classic tiled exterior promises great things, alongside its GBG listing. Two rooms inside, the right side is a dimly-lit affair with little of note. Four cask here and my Liverpool Dark Mode wasn't anywhere near GBG quality (NBSS 1.5). The other bar is lighter and brighter with pub carpet, decent lighting and a bit of life -although when you look up dilapidations are evident. Another four cask round here that were different to the other bar but again majoring on LBC. I tried a Liverpool IPA from this bar which was much better than the previous muck (NBSS 3.5) and served-up by an efficient barmaid. Overall it didn't really deliver – felt like there were too many beers on and that interior desperately needs some work. A shame, as I really wanted to like it.

The Lower Angel is a very basic town centre boozer with small left and right hand bars. The bar to the left is thin with seating under the front window and opposite the bar, up the left hand wall. There was a large speaker on the bar that was blasting out Ska music, much to the delight of the two other customers, one of which was controlling the music. The slightly smaller right hand bar has minimal seating and a television on the wall that was showing muted Eight Out of Ten Cats Does Countdown. There was one other customer in here keeping himself to himself.
There are nine handpumps spread across the two bars, and during my visit on Tuesday evening last week eight of these were up and running. Available were Salopian Shropshire Gold, Wily Fox Dublin Up, Coach House Gunpowder, WeetWood Best, Purple Moose Whakahari, Ossett White Rat, Titanic Plum Porter and Lytham IPA. For fans of keg, Carling, Fosters, John Smiths and Guinness were also available. I had the Plum Porter which was excellent.
I found the service to be very friendly and the other customers were lively, but harmless enough. This place is defiantly a must visit for real ale fans, but I would advise those that don’t like real ale not to bother. I imagine it gets very cosy in here Thursday to Sunday.

I agree with Brainy Pool this pub is a real gem, you may allow a couple of hours in here. This is a two room pub with a central bar serving both rooms. We entered the pub on the left hand side entrance and this side of the pub felt like the bar side of the pub. The lounge side had the real ale chalk board displayed on the left hand side of the bar. The upper stained glass window along the front of the pub were all original and added some charm to the building. Seven ales on handpump on our Saturday afternoon visit, Monks IPA which is just down the road. Empire Rum Porter, Coach House Gunpowder Mild, Weetwood Best, St Austell Tribute, Liquid Light Brewery Ramble On and Ossett White Rat. Very well kept beers in here.
