ORIGINAL REVIEW April 2012.
I have popped in here on a number of occasions over the years, and am glad to report that Declan and his team have done a great job.The side entrance from the lane leading to the canalside has a lounge and restaurant entrance to the left while to the right is a public bar.The lounge area is small with fitted bench seating and good views over the garden while down some steps is a restaurant style section. The public bar is carpeted and well upholstered with a pool table in a lower section leading to the lavs. There is a connecting door from the pool table to the lounge ,so the island bar serves both rooms.
Food is served throughout the day ,and the menu had pub grub staples at very reasonable prices. In fine weather the large garden is a popular feature but does not enjoy any views of the Oxford Canal which passes close by.
There has been a big improvement on the real ale front despite the uninspired choice of the ever dull GK IPA and Old Speckled Hen.A third handpump is dedicated to a rotating guest which on my trip was a very well kept Byatt's Phoenix Gold ,a Locale from a Cov micro.Even higher marks would be awarded if the GK beers were to be replaced.
Given the erratic opening hours of The Boat next door, the Barley Mow is now a safe bet for both a meal and a decent pint on any day of the week.I will be back.

UPDATE
There has been an internal refurb and a lot of character has been lost. The two sided bar has been ripped out and replaced with a bar along the canalside wall. This has opened out the interior ,but you loose the cosy feel.A series of sections are at a lower level than the bar area ,which does have a warming wood burner and some seats in a bay window.
There is a lower dining type area which runs into a small conservatory, while the other side of the bar has a lower pool room and a small dining area on the way to the loos.
There are 4 flatscreens dotted about ,so expect a multitude of sports offerings but thankfully the screens were off when live action isn't being played.
The pub does pub grub food at reasonable prices, and there is a large front garden.Sadly only two real ales from the 4 pumps on my Friday lunchtime visit, the ubiquitous Doom Bar and a tangy TT Landlord (NBSS 1).The locals all seemed to be drinking lager, and the pub has a more laddish feel than before.
It now feels Pubco owned ,in it's present state I couldn't justify a return.

After reading the last review, I can assure you that the GK beers have now been replaced - a Purity brew and Timothy Taylor's Landlord, both being in excellent condition, although Landlord I find more to my taste. I have not eaten here, but otherwise, just as reviewed before.
