The Marquis of Cornwallis is in the Suffolk village of Chedburgh, just off the A143. The pub takes its name from General Charles, Marquis Cornwallis (d. 1805), a former nearby resident who went on to become Governor General of India.
Although the pub is nothing special to look at itself it does benefit from a huge open space in front of the pub and then an additional enclosed side garden with smoking shelter accessible from the games room in the pub.
Fortunately it was warm enough to sit outside when we visited, as the interior of the pub is very purple , with purple carpets, purple bar stools and purple paint on the walls., which wasn’t quite to my taste.
As well as the games room which contains a pool table and dart board, there is the main bar area in front of the bar and then a smaller dining area with its own fireplace and wood burner.
Three handpumps with GK brews on the bar top, although the IPA was one of those poxy North / South chrome contraptions which I refuse to entertain. So it was a decidedly average pint of St Edmunds from one of the regular pumps.
Looked like it was a decent enough community pub with posters advertising pub quizzes, karaoke, and live music nights.,
I wish it well, but frankly I’ve been to much more interesting free houses in the surrounding villages.
