A pleasant pub in the centre of this small village located directly opposite the church which is a landmark from pretty much the whole of Bristol, this has been refurbished since my previous visit when it was looking somewhat dated. It’s now a little more contemporary, but still manages to retain a cosy ambience,

It’s a U-shape pub with a bar counter at the front and also in one of the rear bars. Paintwork is the usual Farrow & Ball shades with green wood panelling on the lower part of the walls and fawn plasterwork above. Flooring is predominantly wood strip with some slate grey tiles around the bar. The room to the rear had some attractive mottled tiling on the floor, maroon paintwork and exposed stone walling to one side. A number of old black and white photographs were dotted around the walls and there was also a couple of shelves of books as well as a few animal skulls affixed to the wall. A feature had been made out of a pile of log ends and there were also some board games available.

The menu offered a decent selection of dishes divided in to “pub classics” such as ham egg & chips, scampi & chips, burger, etc., and most of these were priced around the £10 mark as well as a “main plates” section which was a bit more adventurous and cost nearer £15. A beef & stilton pie was a generous portion and filled to bursting with very tender and tasty meat, whilst a Cajun chicken was also well received. A chocolate and salted caramel torte for desert was exceptionally good.

Beers on tap were Butcombe and Twisted Oak’s Spun Gold, although there was also a third pump available so there may perhaps on occasions be others. Ciders meanwhile were Thatcher’s Gold and Symonds Founders Reserve. Overall I really liked what they’ve done here; the staff were pleasant and friendly, the food was very good and it’s got a pleasant ambience. Perhaps the only let down is the slightly limited beer selection.
