This has always been one of my favourite pubs and it’s also one of the first ones that I ever went to. Tucked away down a quiet country lane, it’s not somewhere you’re going to stumble across by accident so it’s especially gratifying that it’s managed to survive all these years when so many others are closing. There is a small patio area to the front, and another one to the side which offers glimpses of rolling countryside through the trees. There is also a larger beer garden at the rear which is a pleasant spot and backs on to fields.

Inside, it consists of a restaurant area at the front with a larger lounge bar at the rear. The restaurant is a little more contemporary with a wood strip floor and maroon paintwork on the walls, but the lounge is much more traditional and “olde worlde” with a flagstone floor, large stone fire place and plenty of black beams on the ceiling as well as inlaid black timberwork on the walls. Seating is a mixture of church pews and chairs as well as a couple of low leather sofas in front of the fire-place. There are plenty of horse brasses dotted around, but there was also a plasma at the end of the bar which seemed a little out of place. This was not in use on our visit, but a notice did advertise forthcoming F1 screenings. A large window at one gives views over the countryside.

The menu offered a decent selection of pub grub dishes with options such as fish & chips, gammon & chips, sausage & mash, etc., as well as a few burgers and there was also a small specials board next to the fire-place. Main courses were mostly around the £8/£9 mark. We opted for scampi & chips and a lasagne, and these were both decent and tasty dishes and generous portions, especially the lasagne which would have been enough for two.

Beers on tap were Wadworth’s 6X and St. George & The Dragon along with the local Butcombe. Ciders were Thatcher’s Dry, Thatcher’s Gold and Weston’s Old Rosie. All in all, a great pub and well worth making the effort to find it.
