ORIGINAL REVIEW Feb 2010
A few real ales available and the Frog Island Bitter was on good form. The food is substantial but is lacking in quality and not very memorable.Friendly staff and a good place to catch televised sport especially after a lot of the diners will have moved off by 9pm,when the pub reverts to a more " boozer" atmosphere.

UPDATE

After a period of closure,a new team have taken over this historic canalside pub. There has been a much needed deep clean, with new carpets and fresh interior paintwork. The layout and decor is much the same,a low ceiling and three different sections in an open plan interior which winds around the L shaped bar. Some interesting canal photos and memorabilia decorate the walls. There is a very welcoming wood burner in the former double aspect fireplace which was kicking out much needed heat on a chilly lunchtime. The surrounds of this fireplace are a feature, small bread oven and display cabinets to either side, nicely lit.The view over the lockside is memorable, and the exterior tables wonderful in good weather. The flatscreens have gone although the rear lobby still has a darts board and a Northamptonshire skittles table. The only let down was annoying pop radio station muzak being played just too loud.
The food offering is well cooked pub grub from a short menu with a list of specials and I got the impression my cottage pie was cooked on site rather than arriving by a foodservice van.One of the partners runs the kitchen ,the other is behind the bar and food seems to be the main draw at lunchtime, although boaters will be popping in at all times.
Money has been spent getting things shipshape, and I would guess that Marston's may have contributed in an exchange for a supply agreement as three of their offerings were available at the bar namely the ubiquitious(at this time of year) Hobgoblin,New World Pale Ale(decent) and Pedigree (in poor condition and ultimately left unfinished) on my visit. The other two handpumps were unused.
The food is much better than previously,if a little bit pricier (mains generally £7 -£12)and if this is your aim it's worth a visit but such a shame that the same care and attention was not paid to the real ale.Better conditioning and a choice of more interesting ales from the Marston's portfolio of brewers would have warranted a much higher rating.

Revisted on Wednesday 21st September
Nothing had changed really from last year including the menu but warmly greeted by Freindly Bar Maid. As mentione by Thuck Phat all those real ales on offer and looked after.

The New has been through a number of management changes over the years but remains relatively unchanged. It's situated next to Buckby Top Lock on the A5 so on a fine day you can sit and watch boaters negotiate the lock whilst enjoying a beer and listening to the road noise.
Inside is a warren of rooms with a large area to the back used mainly for eating, a smaller area to the left for games including darts and a distinct and well used bar area for drinking. It's all very tired, hasn't been updated in years and could probably do with a little tlc. Clientele tends to be a mixture of Buckby Wharf villagers and boaters along with odd drop in from the A5. The welcome tends to be warm from behind the bar but less so from the locals.
I haven't eaten here recently but the menu looks decent value and consists of basic pub food. I would expect the emphasis to be on quantity rather than quality as it has been whenever I have partaken.
Four handpumps had on Old Hooky, Doom Bar, Warwickshire Beer Co Lady Godiva and a very acceptable Nobby's Guilsborough Gold. The latter two being local breweries.
A decent spot for a beer outside on a nice day if passing but not worth a special journey.
