Whilst the Fountain is probably more food-oriented than the other pubs in Hawes, it still had a decent real ale selection. 4 of 6 handpulls were clipped with Wensleydale Semer Water, Black Sheep Blonde, Theakston Best Bitter & Yorkshire Dales Askrigg Ale. I opted for the Blonde, which was fairly decent.

The pub is a long, thin affair broken into different sections. It was reasonably busy, with seemingly all customers there for lunch. Although we did choose to sit in the section off to the left-hand side. There were perhaps some drinkers in the right-hand section, which we didn't explore.

Unlike Askrigg, I wasn't too impressed with the pubs in Hawes. This one features in the latest Good Beer Guide and is arguably the best of the 3.

A fleeting mid afternoon visit in late October. It looks to have been recently refurbished-the area to the left of the door seemed to be equipped for dining, that to the right with panelling and a welcoming Range was lit.Six hand pumps with Yorkshire fare:my glass of Yorkshire Dales Askrigg Ale was pretty damn good. Lots of keg fonts, friendly welcome. Original visit 30 October 2018

Update:April 2023. A slightly longer Sunday afternoon visit:my initial impressions were correct, though I failed to clock the fake, but atmospheric panelling in the righthand (drinkers') bar.The bar staff were cheery, the food good, and the cask beer was of Good Beer Guide standard-a couple from Black Sheep, alongside Askrigg ale from Yorkshire Dales and Semer Water from Wensleydale. I rapidly got over the water body reference to find a decent floral pale ale.Glad we came.

Visited yesterday afternoon just towards the end of lunch time. As has been noted the room to the left is laid out for dining, the bar is right in front of you as you enter, and there is a room to the right for drinkers, where dining is also possible. At first glance the room to the right looks like it has wood panelling but in actual fact is wallpaper with a mock wood panelling design. Refurbished in 2015, according to WhatPub, it has been done up tastefully but retains a traditional feel. There is an old cast iron fire / stove in the drinkers' room and the kitchen is also accessed through this room. There is bench seating along with tables of different sizes and low stools to make the most of the size of the room.

Of the six hand pulls two were off at the time of my visit, leaving Black Sheep Holy Grail, Theakston Best Bitter, Semer Water (Wensleydale) and Askrigg Ale (Yorkshire Dales Brewing). My Semer Water was pleasant enough and set me back £1.70 for a half.

Unfortunately service didn't feel particularly friendly, nothing specific but I felt I was getting strange looks from the staff, which didn't really make for a relaxing atmosphere. Also in terms of atmosphere there was no music being played, though you could hear Radio 2's Jeremy Vine show coming from the kitchen.

Toilets were nice, clean and modern.

A pleasant enough pub overall, perhaps I caught them on a bit of an off day.
