Quick revisit found two ales - Bombardier and Courage Best (condition good and so-so). The interior hasn’t changed much. Paul, the temporary landlord mentioned in my original review, has sadly long-departed. I get the feeling that this place could do more if it tried, especially as the Rising Sun isn’t as good as it once was.

Enjoyable old pub with a few drinking areas, low ceilings, wattle & daub-style walls and big beams. Two handpulls on offer (Courage Best and London Pride) in good nick. Has a function room and a beer garden. Pub needs some work doing to it, though planning restrictions may make this difficult. New (currently temporary) landlord, Paul, has the right idea. Hopefully he'll get the chance to push this place forward as it has potential. Not bad and may well get better, still. Rated 6

In an area where decent pubs are few and far between the Wheatsheaf is probably my pick of the bunch. It appears to have once been two separate buildings that have been knocked through and this is also reflected in the interior layout with two separate bars.

The smaller bar to the right is cosy enough with low beamed ceilings, banquette seating and a flat screen TV in one corner. This bar seemed to be the locals preferred choice. The larger left hand bar is itself virtually divided into two by a large pillar containing a fire. The décor and furnishings are similar throughout with carpets and plenty of Brewery Tudor on show. The textured plastered wall surfaces contained several old pictures of the area including some of the pub in days gone by.

On the beer front there are 6 pumps (3 in each bar) but just the 2 ales available on my visit - Courage Best and Doom Bar. The Doom Bar was decent enough quality wise but a bit overpriced at £3.30.

The place wasn’t very busy for my Saturday lunchtime visit so I can’t really speak for the general customer base but those I encountered seemed a decent enough bunch. Whilst the pub certainly has an element of character, it is too far away from anything of interest to be of much benefit to anyone apart from the locals and unless you want to do a crawl of what are at best some very average pubs or watch the planes take off from Heathrow from the beer garden, then it isn’t really worth the journey.
