With its lovely Charrington’s tilework now on show, this was recently a rather scruffy locals’ pub which narrowly escaped conversion, saved and renamed for a few minutes as Winnicott until the brand went under. Acquired in 2017 by the same company that gave us the agreeable film-themed Alma down the road and less appealing Hitchcock-themed North By Northwest, comes the 1950s’ Rock ‘n’ Roll-themed Be-Bop-a-Lula. You’d think that this pub would be a bit predictable, with prints of Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, Bill Haley, a Wurlitzer and neon Coca-Cola signs, lots of Americana and you’d be right, but there are also over 30 period electric and acoustic guitars hanging from the ceiling, a Gulf oil logo and more too. There are games machines, but for once, they look right in here. There’s period-themed karaoke and live 1950s' music which sounded good on our visit. Food is of course from the school of American gastronomy, hotdogs and the like. You can even tuck into Little Richard’s sausage. Furniture seemed fairly conventional and the floor was bare boarded.
Late evening, there was a very elderly lady reliving her youth by boogying the night away with gusto. Other customers were very mixed, some probably too young to remember the ‘90s. Overall there was a lively, good atmosphere in here.
Ale: two pumps, clips disappointingly reversed, thereafter the ultimate disappointment: Doom Bar at £2.20 a half and as good as its ever going to get.
This place is different, certainly better than expected and a lot nicer than the Red Lion. If they got in some better real ale I may even return - the seven-day midnight (2.00 am Friday and Saturday) licence is an incentive.

Moby Duck left this review about Winnicott

A corner pub that has undergone some modernisation inside, only two of four pumps were working,Black Sheep Bitter and Shepherd Neame Whitstable Bay which unfortunately wasn't in great shape. I found it to be a comfortable pub but wouldn't go out of my way to visit again.

Steve C left this review about The Monarch

This place is a U shaped locals boozer where there had obviously been some all day midweek drinking looking at the state of some of them when I visited one evening last week. There’s only a standard draught selection, but the Guinness was perfectly acceptable and cheap for the area. There is a pool table to the left of the bar and a dartboard to the right and there are also a couple of plasma screens for showing the sports. There are also some pool competition nights that were advertised on the walls.

I was surprised to fins a large comfortable seating area out the back that has been done well and looks nice with all the trellising.

I probably wouldn’t use this pub if I lived locally.
