Originally the Heathcote Tavern and dating from 1905 in the Elizabethan Revival style to the designs of Yetts, Sturdy & Usher, featuring half-timbered gables and pargeting. This has been taken over by the ‘… & Star’, ‘Star of …’ or '...Star' chain and my experience seems to mirror that of David’s from November 2017.
The interior now is completely modern, with a largely featureless all-over black paint job, modern floor, modern lounge-style furniture or canteen-style tubular steel and plywood stuff. Décor takes the form of whacky prints or large pot plants, lit by mixed trendy light fittings. An unwatched silent TV exhibited no purpose, music was loudish and there’s a games room to the rear, with pool and pinball, beyond which is what is claimed to be the largest beer garden in Leytonstone. Further entertainment came in the form of future comedy acts from the likes of Hal Cruttenden and Alan Davies, so perhaps QI doesn’t pay that well. Customers were mixed professional types, though mainly young, making for very loud conversation.
At least there was a cask ale here aside from two unused pumps: Purity Pure Gold, just £5.20 a pint, in good condition and served by an efficient barman.
The Star by Hackney Downs is proof that this chain can come up with a decent venue, but with a student union bar feel, this isn’t really my type of place and the cask choice is limited; it also requires a bit of a pilgrimage to get here.

This place was formerly a Charrington house.
It's one of those pubs that had an ACV slapped on it after rumours that the owners wanted to turn it into flats.
whether the ACV is the only reason it's still a pub is another matter. It was doing a good trade on a Saturday afternoon with the far right area and a few tables reserved from about half hour after my arrival.
It's a large corner pub with three areas that forms a rough L shape. As you enter there's the bar area which is fairly standard. To the far right is an area with more comfy furnishings. Behind the bar is a Games Room with a projector screen showing football results with no sound, two pool tables and two table tennis tables. Just what is it about these trendy new Leytonstone outlets? They're supposed to be pubs not youth clubs. I sat in the far right room where there was a table with the parents of some kids who were being allowed to run riot so it's not just Wetherspoons that has this problem.
There are just three hand pumps which had one unused, Three Sods Mud Puddler and Signature Brew Wild Winter Smoke Fairies. I went for the Signature beer which seemed in good nick but went completely flat. Having said that, I had a pint of it in the E17 Bell the day before and it did the same thing, so it's probably not the pub's fault. It cost £4.50 which is steep but it is advertised as a 6.8% beer.
I wasn't really taken with this place with the limited ale choice and given that I hardly ever visit this area I doubt that I'll return.

Another Star Group purchase, I was less impressed with this than the other incarnations. Internally it seems to have lost much of its original styling, now being mainly an L-shaped black with plenty of space between the perimeter seating and the ends of each of the L headed by neon signs reading "Play" and "Party" (the former leads to a Games Room with pool tables, et al and the former to a function room. Packed on my Wednesday night visit and noisy to boot, there was indeterminate background music, the bass hum the sole of what I could hear, and a couple of screens on mute showing a Champions' League match. Even more disappointingly, knowing the chain, of three handpumps, just one was on offer - a watery Signature Session - which was served to me by a barman in leather jacket and Slipknot baseball cap. In a strange reversal of fortune I felt the eldest in the throng, so felt no compulsion to prolong my stay.
