A large and imposing brick built pub just down the road from Horfield Common, it looks as though it may be undergoing some refurbishment work at present with much of the car park in front of the pub fenced off and dug up. Inside it’s very much a pub of two halves with a dated old bar to the right and a quite contemporary dining room to the left. A new looking sign outside describes it as a “Bar & Restaurant”.

The bar to the right had a wood strip floor, brown vinyl bench seating around the perimeter, a tiled fire-place on one wall and a small TV stuck on the wall above it, although this was not in use on our visit. The paintwork was a mixture of cream and brown and an old hi-fi was playing a local radio station rather too loudly. The smart looking restaurant seemed somewhat at odds with the rest of the pub and this has a parquet wood floor, wood panelling on the walls lending something of a hotel drawing room feel and a couple of old leather sofa’s at the rear as well as a couple more fire-places. Beyond this is a beer garden which usefully also has an outside bar, although there were no ales available here, just one cider and one lager. The garden itself looked rather tired and could clearly do with a bit of TLC. A giant Connect 4 game might have been an interesting distraction if it weren’t’ for the fact that all the prices were missing.

Beers on tap were Doom Bar and Butcombe whilst the ciders were Aspall’s Suffolk and Thatcher’s Gold, the latter being somewhat past it’s best.

Now known just as the Beehive it's now been split to a Restaurant on the left and Bar on the right. The residential development surrounding the pub which was seemingly threatening the pubs existence a while ago has landed it with a purpose built car park off the access road to the new houses where what was previously a no mans land area of is it the pubs car park or not.

In the bar a selection of ales are available and it's a mix of tall tables and stools, standard tables and chairs and walled benches.

In all this is a nice pub and the garden makes a pleasant retreat on a lovely summers day.

28th July 2012 Blackboard outside asking for help to stop it becoming houses. Looking online the surrounding land has had planning granted for houses so guess the pub is the next target to maximize the site.
