This pub has the appearance of one that has gone down the gastropub route, although I didn't get to see a menu. There is now no carpet on the floor, but the wood parquet flooring now revealed is a very attractive feature. The walls have some fielded wood panelling, but now painted gastro grey of course, as is the bar counter front. There's one of those water containers on the counter, as well as a large coffee machine of some sort. There are one or two sofas of course, but mainly furnishings are normal tables and chairs.

A massive blackboard on one of the walls advertised all manner of things, like free water for dogs (I've yet to encounter a pub that would charge a dog for a drink); wi-fi; a steak night plus a two for one meal deal; and live entertainment (something called "Accoustica"). There's a garden at the rear, plus a small car park at the front. A room/area on the right had some antlers mounted on the wall, with a framed advertisement on the mantlepiece featuring a deer and informing us that hunting season is open. Hmmm - I suppose this far north I must be in the countryside.

A small blackboard on the counter advertised Pedrino Fizz for £6.95. Luckily they also sold real ale - Butcombe Bitter, GK Abbot, and St Austell Tribute (£2 a half), with another couple of pumps having reversed clips. I didn't see a menu, but at around 2.20 on a weekday afternoon I saw a group at another table tucking into their grub.

Even though it looks a bit gastro, this is still a real pub - the food business hasn't taken over the pub. It's certainly not a destination pub; it seemed friendly enough and is OK for a beer or two if you're in the area.

On the face of it this is a nice enough pub with a good beer garden, but I found it a little stuffy and uncomfortable. The barman was nice enough in a formal kind of way and the three other people in the pub on my Wednesday night visit seemed pleasant. The Pride was good and Abbot was also available alongside a standard draught selection. There was also an unused hand pump that could be hooked up to something a little more imaginative in the ale department.

There is a plasma screen and I found the dance music playing on the sound system to be a little out of place. The sign outside purports this pub as being a ‘Bar and Eating House', but I would have said that it is a pub rather than some gimmicky restaurant.

I should have enjoyed it in here, but I just didn't like the atmosphere so I doubt that I'll ever return.
