An interesting old building, and really that was the only reason I was here: it features in a book of walks between interesting London pubs that I was following on my winter visits to London. Is it a pub? Well, no - not really. It's mostly a wine emporium, though there are seven keg fonts serving lager, cider and Guinness. I went for Camden Hells, which was particularly nasty. It was pretty quiet here, and I was glad I had come - perhaps I should have had a glass of wine instead.

The Olde Wine Shades retains an olde worldie feel even though it is now run by the Spanish chain El Vino. The bar on the right wall facing seating down the left supports three keg products which were Shepherd Neame’s Whitstable Bay, Estrella Galicia and Guinness. Midway up the pub is a step up to a rear seating area and there is a seating area downstairs, but an event was in progress so didn’t get to have a gander. Unsurprisingly there is a tapas food menu.

Part of the El Vino chain of wine bars, the sign states 1663 as the founding year ,so somehow this building escaped the Great Fire.Today it has a very traditional wooden frontage and a fine El Vino hanging sign. The entrance opens into a tap room, but there is a charming one tabled side snug tucked away called the Dickens Room.Elswehere the furniture is traditional with two open seating booths below the front window,a decent fireplace with good mirror above and a generous bar with some stools and two large unused tuns behind the bar,no doubt once used as wine vats.
There are three keg beers taps offering Guiness,Estrella Galicia lager and Shepherd Neame Whitstable Bay Pale. However I went for a 125 cl house red at a reasonable £4.50,it tasted good. There is a Spanish influence here ,that's where the house wines come from and the food is tapas.
Towards the rear is a raised area, where you can dine but this is not exclusively for diners but you will be asked the question if you pitch down here.Take a look downstairs at the private rooms for hire, the vaults are particularly charming.
It's quite modest in size, and there are 3 external tables overspill and for smoking. One of the oldest drinking establishments in the City, worth a squint but I would't base myself here all evening.
