Decent enough pub close to the station. I prefer the Castle but if you have the time to do 2 pubs you may as well do both!

Rather dark, cavernous pub with numerous pillars making ita bit claustrophobic. With the road outside pedestrianised, this possibly accounts for the mass of people on the pavement if the weather is nice. Those of us of a certain age still find it strange voluntarily asking for a pint of Watneys, but that is one of several ales available and the condition seemed ok. Upstairs is a Thai restaurant with Thai food available alongside more conventional dishes in the pub. Tolerable to grab a pint on the way to the station opposite.

A pub which has a history dating back to the early 18th century but was rebuilt in the 1950s, and closes at 7.00 pm on Saturdays and is closed all day Sunday; it has a separate Thai restaurant upstairs. Clients here tend to be locals and office workers seeking a pint as their last stop before hitting Farringdon tube which you can feel rumbling beneath whenever a train passes - no hipsters here. The floor is part modern boarded and part carpeted with modern restaurant-style furniture. Illumination is very gloomy and seems mainly to come from fairy lights. There's floral print wallpaper and muted soul music played over the gramophone.
A friendly barman, though if he'd listened he'd have served me with a half and not pint as requested. Ales: Watney's Pale Ale, St. Austell's Tribute and Butcombe's Bitter at a very steep £4.70 a pint which is too much for the area and certainly too much for a pub of this style.
