A pub of contrasts - a rather lovely ornate exterior gives way to a huge room which was a shocking refurb-by-IKEA place with, initially, all the charm of a box of Tesco Value tissues. That said, there were a couple of decent ales on and the two Sharps ales were in good form. There were also a couple of premium lagers available. After a while I began to warm to the place a little and noticed a few of the better/quirkier points; the multitude of mirrors on the left hand wall, leather sofas by the fire and a number of skylights to the rear which at least allowed some natural light to penetrate the place. In fact, the rear looked like it was set up mainly for diners and vino-chuggers - sadly the place was almost empty on our evening visit, making it an atmosphere-less experience. There were also a number of plasma screen TVs located directly above the bar, showing muted SKY Sports. A large amount of money has clearly been spent on this place, I would be intrigued to find out what it was like prior to the refurb.

Overall I think I’d struggle to find a reason to return.

The small but bright frontage gives the impression you are walking into a typical back street boozer but this just belies what you find inside. The high ceilings, abundance of light wood and regimented furniture layout meant my first impression was a bit like that of an Ikea showroom. However on closer inspection I found this was a really nice pub to bar conversion. There are a number of mirrors on one wall and the rest of the wall space is given over to sports photos or old railway advertisements. There's a couple of comfy sofas and a number pf plasma screens that show all the main sporting events. A number of skylights have been added to give the bar some natural light. Didn't try the food but the bar was well stocked. They had two hand pumps in operation, one with Sharps Doom Bar, continental lagers on draught, and some Belgian bottled beers. The bottle of Duvel I had was rather pricey at £3.90 but did come in a branded glass which I always feel is the sign of a good pub.
