I think it’s fair to say that the Newton Arms isn’t going to come close to appearing on any chocolate box covers. Even the copious floral displays cannot save this ugly cube of a building wedged under a modern office block from being anything other than the sort of eyesore that the likes of Betjeman would glady have shoved 3 tons of explosives beneath and happily pushed the button.

The interior is not exactly picture postcard either, merely a small and functional bar with a low fake wooden ceiling and plain, nondescript décor with a slight Irish feel to it. The seated areas are carpeted with tiling around the open bar and there is a raised section in one corner. A few pictures amd posters break up some of the blandness and an array of TV’s dotted around the walls are largely tuned to sports channels.

There are 4 hand pumps that were offering Adnams Bitter on 2 of them with Doom Bar and Ripple Steam Best Bitter on the others. The latter was £3.55 which is probably expected in this area. The food is a lot more reasonable with a small selection of cheap and basic meals for around £5-6 that no doubt is popular with lunchtinme workers.

For all its lack of charmand character, it is an unpretentious and relatively civilized place that probably has its uses on a rainy day when you can’t be bothered to seek out anywhere else.

Cannot improve on 'OK but nothing special'. Also found it OK for a pint if you’re passing, but not worth going out of your way for. And even less so as it is currently covered in scaffolding and therefore less appealing from the outside.
Courage Best and Admans still the available beers.

They had Courage Best and Adnam’s Bitter on. The Adnam’s was £3 per pint, which now seems to be the Central London going rate for an average pint of beer. But it tasted OK. Seating comprises plastic covered banquettes and tables, plus high stools around ledges by the windows. The layout of this pub remains unchanged since it was one of my regular haunts back in the 70s. This is another one of those OK but nothing special pubs. OK for a pint if you’re passing, but not worth going out of your way for.
