The Dumb Bell is a country pub situated in Hornhill about a mile from the village of Chalfont St Peter in the Chalfonts .
Externally it’s a pleasant looking pub as you approach, usually festooned with hanging baskets in summer. There are half a dozen bench tables out front and then an extremely large garden out back with an extensive collection of children’s climbing frames and structures, indicating that they try to attract the families in summer.
Internally you can see the original multi roomed set up and it is still five distinct areas although all now connected. There is a small room area to the front where the bar is situated, an even smaller snug area to the right of the bar, an additional seating area to the right of the bar and then a small square area mainly set for dining to the far right. And finally there is a larger area out back towards the garden, which looks like it could be an extension to the original pub building, which is used for dining.
The décor is certainly traditional country pub, with every ceiling in the separate areas being covered by an assortment of hanging collections, brass kettles in one china pots in another e.t.c., and although in areas it’s a bit grubby and the seating and décor is in need of a bit of TLC, this doesn’t distract from this being a very comfortable place for a pint.
And in this respect there are five ale pumps on the bar but only three beers on during my visit as the available Courage Best and TT Landlord were doubled up with a lone London Pride pump which was off .
It is in the middle of nowhere, relatively speaking so therefore tries to pull punters in with a decent looking food menu. We did not eat , but a few were and they also had a Hog roast on the go for the wet bank holiday Monday we visited.
All in all a decent pub and I wouldn’t hesitate to search it out again when next in the area.
