Lovely back street heritage pub with central bar counter in dark wood with foot rails and hooks. The bar incorporates pillars with capitals in the form of leaves or feathers. Walls are adorned with pictures, mostly of ancient pin-ups. There are five hand pumps with three Young's beers plus a guest from By The Horns. I went for Young's Winter Warmer 5% (NBSS 3.5) at £6/pint. This pub opens at 11am, which makes it a handy stop before a midday train.

Favourite London Pub. Saturday is the time to come, as its very quiet. Mid week, I've rarely been able to get a seat.

Wonderful interior - island bar with snob screens, lots of wood. Youngs speacial in good condition.

ORIGINAL REVIEW Jan 2015

A revisit after at least 10 years, and glad to report that the interior is still unchanged ,unspoiled and a classic. The snob screens to either side of the horseshoe bar,the etched glass windows, the leather upholstered seating and the polyphon (will be played for a donation to charity) are all noteworth in an interior which is quite small. There is a square snug beyond the righthand side of the bar,and food is served these days which smelt good but not sampled on my Friday after work trip,a time when the pub is very busy with a wide age range of customers all drawn by it's charm.
Things have improved on the ale front, with only three Charles Wells brewed ales (Youngs Winter Warmer,London Gold and Special) and guests in the shape of Redemption Bloomsbury Blend (good nick),Sharps Cornish Coaster,Adnams Southwold Bitter and Old Ale (well kept).Maybe not the most exciting guest list on my trip, although a more regular customer and friend did say that often the guest list is much stronger.
Worth a visit for the interior alone, and now with decent real ale, this is somewhere to head for and enjoy.

UPDATE

A new team here have reduced the ale options. On my trip Youngs Original and Special were both doubled up,along with Sambrooks Junction and Wimbledon Copper Leaf leaving the only realistic decent option of St Austell Proper Job which quickly ran out on a Friday evening. So we ran out !
A classic pub interior badly let down by a poor ale choice.Downgrade.
