We called in for refreshment when on a cycle ride from Lincoln to the nearby youth hostel at Woody's Top. There was only one car in the car park, which was surprising as it was a fine Saturday afternoon and the pub looks attractive, if a little run down. Inside, two people were sat at the bar counter on stools, one of whom turned out to be the landlord. We were greeted, however, by his dog, a rather fat Rottweiler, who ran out without restraint and peed in a plant pot outside the door.

On the bar were three or four hand pumps, with two pump clips showing. Beers available were Black Horse Lincolnshire Traditional Bitter and Youngs Bitter. I asked for two halves of the former, but when I took them out to my partner, who was avoiding the dog, they turned out to be vinegar.

I returned with my beers to the bar and told the landlord that the beer was undrinkable. He took a courageous gulp of one of the halves and said "nothing wrong with it" - but nevertheless offered alternatives from the Youngs pump. When he put the two glasses on the counter I took a swig, whereupon he turned to his other customer and said, "there, I knew he'd do that!". To be fair, this beer was at least in drinkable condition, but this man's idea of customer service is the only explanation needed for why this pub was all but empty at a time of the week when it should have been busy.

We were both saddened at the thought that this pub is more likely to close than prosper. With a little effort it could be made into a destination pub for people in neighbouring villages, instead of which it is in apparent terminal decline.
