Clean and tidy with friendly and helpful bar staff. No real ale on so our visit was short which is a shame because it's a good location and could be a very good boozer.

A Marstons house situated by the penultimate lock to the top of the notoriously hard work Wigan 23 flight.Consequently boaters will either pop in exhausted after climbing up 214 feet or will wait at the top lock overnight in the hope of freeloading down the locks next morning with a boat with a fit crew.So there is a focus on food, with most dishes £5.50 for standard pub grub, but higher prices for steaks and mixed grills.Boaters tend to use the lounge overlooking the lock, with large picture windows and clean if unmemorable furniture.Around the other side of the bar,the locals drink in an area with an alcove for a pool table,a TV with daytime coverage, and this area has the feel of a public bar.
There is also an awning outside with a few wooden benches, and the pub backs on to a large area of housing. There was only one handpump, with a reversed Marston's Bitter clip,so our stay was short and sweet as we were not in the market for a meal.Given the location,I was left feeling that an opportunity is being missed by the current incumbents.
