beer quality has certainly improved a lot here since my last visit. it's still catering a little too much to the expensive gastro/gin sipping brigade for my liking but I suppose an old pub on a country road needs to compete somehow. it's in a quiet area with a lot of other good pubs but seems more popular than ever.

The Holts Arms is a Marstons pub just off the main road in Billinge. The pub was built in 1721 and was originally called The Bowling Green till the name changed in the early 1900's,and is nicknamed "The Foot"due to it's position at the foot of an ancient causeway that once linked Liverpool and Manchester. In 2011 the pub undertook an excellent refurbishment that has still kept the pubs character and charm intact'
This pub has low ceilings, original beams(I think)lots of old photos and prints of the pub in bygone times plus a rear beer terrace and a childrens play area.
There are always 4 casks on the go,3 of which are changed on a regular basis plus one cask exclusive to the pub which I think is called Harveys that is named after there Labrador dog.
The pub has had it's fair share of ghost tales some of which probably started from the cool stone cellar which was used as an overflow mortuary in the pubs early days.
This pub is definitely worth a visit if you are ever in the area
