A traditional looking pub located in a side street just off the main drag up past the castle, they’ve made the most of the pedestrianised lane that they are located in with plenty of benches outside and it looked a reasonably appealing place to pop in.

I was a little surprised to find it more contemporary than I had expected internally, with an entrance foyer made out of plate glass etched with the pub’s name like you might expect to find in an upmarket gastro-pub. Décor wise it’s fairly unremarkable, with blue wood panelling on the lower part of the walls and cream plasterwork above, although the panelling extended to the full height of the walls in some places meaning that it might have felt quite elegant if it wasn’t for the fact that it was looking a little shabby in place. Flooring was parquet wood strip, whilst one wall at the end had been entirely clad in sanded wooden boards. A small fireplace was off to one side with a wood burning stove and a large gilded mirror above. No doubt due to it’s location, numerous strings of Union Jack flags were hung around, but overall I thought it very much lacking in anything in the way of character. Service was a bit shoddy as well with tables left uncleared for some considerable time.

The solitary beer on tap was Courage Best, with another pump appearing unused. Ciders meanwhile were Inch’s Medium Apple and Old Rosie. Prices seemed quite ludicrous with a pint of the Inch’s and a G&T coming in at an eye watering £15.70. Overall, whilst there was nothing really wrong with this place, there are far better options just a short stroll away.

Surprising GBG 2019 entry - looks like a gastro pub and from a chalk board offering Olives and Wasabi nuts to go with the beer, that would be a fair description.

Four hand pulls on - Black Sheep surprising "value" at £3.90. In decent condition.

Lots of dining, lots of tourists.

Popped in again just before Christmas - no problems with my Dark Star Hophead. The decor has settled in a bit and this seems to be a good destination. 7.5

Blagged our way in on opening night. Has had a thorough going-over inside and out and has been re-opened under the auspices of a former manager of the nearby Carpenters Arms. It’s a multi-roomed place with some nice décor touches in each, a black and white tiled bar back and a plate glass entrance. Six ales on and a good selection; we tried the West Berks GOB, W&E Mandarin, and Slaters Smoked Porter which were all in decent nick but came in those annoying mini-goblets that chomp some of the conditioning out of the ale on pouring. Won’t leave a mark but will say that this looks very much like one that’ll be on the radar. Unrated

Now an Oirish boozer which at least had a couple of their natives in situ. Not much changed from its Highlander days except that it looks more down-at-heel. A few seating areas with the long bar off to the left. Nicotine yellow and light red varnish colour scheme. Some quirky high-back wooden pew seating and varnished wood board flooring. Militaria dotted about. Two TVs showing Champs League footy. Two pumps; one redundant, the other selling a fairly terrible Doom Bar for a fairly inflated price. Rated 4

This pub is in the lanes close to the castle. A fair range of ale and on the cheaper side of Windsor's wallet-busting standards. Good atmosphere inside. Rated 6
