Unexpectedly good GK pub. The staple-shaped interior has clearly done up recently (local hero scheme?). Gold and black flock wallpaper, green metro tiling and third length green wainscoting make for an unusual but fairly tasteful look. Though the fake distressed green paint on the floor to ceiling beams is a design misstep. Friendly punters inside. Decent rear garden. Scotland losing to Georgia on the box. Quiz night (with wall-mounted leader board) and child-friendly. Eight ales; GK OGH, OSH, IPA London Glory and Aloha with guests in shape of WEBREW Knight of Garter (very good nick), Chiltern Beeches (ditto) and Rebellion IPA. My glass was a bit grotty though. Mentions elsewhere of a real cider range but I didn’t clock any myself. Overall, pretty good I thought.

The Stag and Hounds is a former Green King pub situated on The Broadway in Farnham Common which previously didn’t warrant a look when driving past to the far more superior Real Ale country pubs on the other side of Burnham Beeches.
However late last year it was completely refurbished and, with new owners and an allegedly re-vamped food menu, re-opened in October 2012. But what made it worthy of a first visit was the advert in the local Slough CAMRA rag promoting a wide range of real cask ales, and describing that the pub has a new focus on local ales and local food.
And this part now seems to be true. The bar supports 10 Ale hand pumps and although five of these were dispensing GK brews for my inaugural visit, the other 5 had other brewery ales available such as Hogs Back Hop Garden Gold, Ascot Ales Rhino Rye and Posh Pooch and Windsor and Eton Windsor Knot and the couple I tried were well kept.
A good thing that gives belief in the statement that the pub is now focusing on a wide range of real cask ales is that the new owners have had a window fitted which looks directly into the cellar room at the back, and installed a chalk board next to it detailing the forthcoming next 10 ales, so that regulars are able to see the 20 or so on or coming soon barrels on stillage.
Can’t comment on what it was like before, but the current interior is very comfortable. Its got a few modern touches but still feels and looks fairly traditional. Probably a former two room pub, but now one internal space but still keeping a slightly different feel from the left side to the more lounge feeling right side. A couple of nice points is the ceiling, being covered with an old style local area map centralised on Farnham Common, and a wall which is made entirely of beer bottles, and the use of old Greene King ale kegs as seating stools, which some of us would comment is the best use for them.
It doesn’t seem to be a GK tied house anymore and I guess the availability of so many GK brews is down to historical allegiances, but the list of decent local brewery ales on the coming soon list will be enough to guarantee repeat visits over the next couple of months.
