Brakspears house but with a difference. Located in a lovely rural location (there are hay bales out the front for your horse!) there’s a lovely farmhouse-rustic ambience inside, well-decorated with wood floor and suitably muted lighting. A real fire was on the go giving out the sort of warmth you just can’t get from a radiator. A number of framed ‘indentures’ on the walls, though my reading of copperplate wasn’t up to standard so I remained ignorant of exactly what they were referring to. Mainly set for eating in the front room, the bar is to the rear with a small amount of dedicated drinking space. Beyond this is a lovely spacious rear garden with views across the adjoining fields. Selection of papers available. Also noted a number of gratis fleeces to borrow when sitting outside, a nice touch. Six ales available; four from the Marstons stable (Brakspear Oxford Gold, Brakspear Bitter, Hobgoblin and Ringwood Showmans Tipple) alongside two guests in Oakham Citra and Goffs White Knight. The Ringwood and Goffs ales were both in good shape, though the barmaid could have tried smiling a bit more. A really good little place this and well-worth going off the beaten track to sample.

Now that the sun has decided to make an appearance finally, lunch time visits to the Blackwood Arms are in order. It’s now two years since the new stewardship took over and it is going from strength to strength.
There are five Real ale pumps on the bar which usually dispense Brakspears Bitter and Oxford Gold, Ringwood porter and a couple from Wychwood, usually Hobgoblin and the seasonal offering..
But on last week’s visit they still had some of the barrels they had for their St Georges weekend beer festival out back on silage. So we were able to enjoy Crouch Vale Brewers gold extra, Blue Monkey Sanctuary and Elgoods Golden Newt.
It’s unrealistic to dream of the days in the 80’s when it got in the Guinness Book of records for dispensing over 1000 different ales in a year, but along with the nearby Jolly Woodman and Royal Standard this still makes a wonderful beer stroll through the country lanes.
