Decent-looking side-street local, retaining a two-bar layout (one of which has a further seating / dining area raised up a short flight of steps). Fairly traditional in terms of furniture and decor - no frills, but a few interesting pictures to look at. Also has a reasonable beer garden at the back. No handpumps visible as you enter, but there are two in the second room; dispensing Landlord and G2 Plough (£3.60).

Interesting building on the way out of the town, seems small from the outside but opens up into a split level bar with a garden at the rear/ Friendly welcome. The lower bar is beamed whilst the higher looks like a possible extension at some point. " real ales, Black Sheep and West Berks Good Old Boy on my visit, quality was alright

Previously a GBG pub, the Red Lion was built in 1850 on the site of an earlier pub which first sold beer in 1805 having been a farmhouse and forge before that. It is now an unusually pleasant town centre pub hidden just off the one-way system in a nice part of the old town. There is a small public bar with a gaming machine, dart board and open fireplace to the right of the entrance, and a larger saloon bar to the left. Off the saloon is a raised area with table for diners. There are exposed beams and a brick chimney breast, but I wonder how 'genuine' these are bearing in mind the age and style of the building. All in all, it's a very agreeable atmosphere. There is free wifi available. There were 2 ales on, Bateman's and Bombardier, bith very well kept. Well worth seeking out, but be aware that parking is a problem if travelling by car.
