The Two Brewers is named in recognition of the two Breweries that once occupied a site behind the buildings opposite on land that is now a car park. The pub is housed in a wonderful building, probably around 400 years old, with a terrific Victorian tiled façade and weather boarded sides and back. The interior contains many low beams that have claimed many a 6 footer who forgot to duck and there is an old central fireplace containing a range that was until recently hidden behind a bank of fruit machines. The pub had been neglected for many years until a change of management saw the reintroduction of Real Ales and a few licks of paint added and for a while, this became one of my favourite Dartford pubs. Unfortunately it didn’t last and things declined rapidly. Put off by the unsavoury characters that the pub attracts, I recently paid my first visit for 2 years and found the place as bad as it has ever been. The décor is now tatty and worn and a large section of the pub has been given over to sofas whilst a pool table takes up another large chunk of the floor space. The 4 hand pumps are once again redundant and the customer base is full of effers and blinders with little respect or regard for anyone else around them whilst the staff seemingly turn a blind eye. The doorways contain a huge collection of discarded fag ends and all the flat surfaces in the loos have been textured which tells its own story. The rear car park contains a rather sorry attempt at a beer garden with a fine view of the multi-storey car park next door. I have always hoped that someone would realise the pub’s potential, clear out the unsavoury elements and make the place the fine pub it deserves to be but sadly I can only see it being added to the pub closed statistics in due course.
