Apparently the original pub fell off the cliff some while ago so this one was recreated in old stable buildings, which presents a rather formidable and austere exterior. Inside however there is a jumbled range of nice wooden-panelled rooms with a cosy feel. As mentioned below, it is squarely aimed at the family market, but as they have their own dedicated areas both inside and outside it is not difficult to find a quieter part for drinking. Usual range of beers for Thorley Taverns on offer, including one from Gadds. Food not sampled but seemed very popular.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about The Captain Digby
Large Thorley Taverns pub / restaurant housed in an austere castellated folly in a fine position overlooking Kingsgate Bay. Aimed firmly at the family dining market, the 'L'-shaped bar has been extended (up a few steps) to the Clifftop Restaurant at one end and the Pirate's Playground at the other. Also has some outside booths and benches if the weather is clement. Bombardier and Adnam's Fat Sprat (£3.60) from two of three handpumps, with a reversed Doom Bar clip also noted.

As my kids have grown and flown the Captain Digby is usually the type of “family pub and restaurant" place I try to avoid like the plague nowadays. And would have done so with this one if it wasn’t for its unique selling point of having a commanding position on the clifftop providing excellent views of the impressive Kingsgate Bay from the outside drinking terrace.
On entering to see a poster advertising children’s parties in an indoor play area with unlimited squash and a meal from the Pirates menu tells you all you need to know who the target demographic is for the Captain Digby. But at least a couple of TV screens in the traditional décor main bar area showing the Sunday premiership football provides a drinking space for the old man whilst the precious ones are in the sizeable indoor kids play area. And then outside of the space around the bar the rest of the pub is set as a restaurant for dining..
And shame on me for initially thinking that this stone castle building was probably a mock 1970’s castle character build pub when you see the history plaque which details the Captain Digby is one of the oldest drinking houses in Thanet and was originally built as an alms-house in the 1760’s and the main pub building is the original stables built in 1816.
For the record the usual set of draft beers were available and the bar also supports three ale pumps and Bombardier Gold and Sharp Atlantic were on with the third reverse clipped.
This one is run by a company called Thorley Taverns who have some 40 outlets throughout Margate, Broadstairs and Ramsgate and advertise themselves as Thanet’s finest pub, bar, restaurant and hotel operator. But not being from the Thanet area I cannot comment if this is something to be proud of or not.
