This pupose built Shepherd Neame pub has stood on its prominent corner plot just off the main shopping area since 1851.

The interior consists of a front bar area with banquette seating, dart board, flat screen TV (Sky & ESPN both shown) and a larger rear bar with 2 further TVs. The ironwork bar canopy holds a collection of dangling wine glasses and throughout the two bars, a mass of nautical collectables, pots, pans, lanterns and what the pub claim to be the biggest collection of antique brasses in Britain. The pub has a very warm a cosy feel enhanced by subdued glowing lighting, rich carpets, dark paneling and open fires. On the first floor is the Victorian restaurant, quite expensive but it has a good reputation although I’ve never dined there. There is also a function room available.

Beers are limited to the Shepherd Neame range and choice is usually disappointing with 6 hand pumps rarely offering more than a small selection and on my last visit just Spitfire was available and at £3.50 a pint, somewhat overpriced.

There is a good mix of people who use the place, the prices probably keep the local oiks at bay, and it is certainly one of Bexleyheath’s better pubs but for all its intrinsic attractiveness and charm, the pub for me is let down by the weak selection of the ales and one can only imagine the potential of the place in the hands of of an ale enthusiast and free of tie
