This one is not to be confused with the Cowper Arms at Cole Green, a mere five miles away towards Hertford. Although in certain respects they are very similar pubs in that they are both food focussed, this one I found to have a better pub vibe.
You enter into a low-ceilinged wood beamed, tiled floor main bar section that wraps around the L shaped bar. Then off the bar area are two additional carpeted room spaces, one left one right, which are mainly set for dining. Then there is some external patio space to the left and the back of the pub which gives you a good vista of the car park. Unfortunately, there is no spacious garden here like there is at the other Cowper Arms.
This one is a McMullen’s pub and there are two sets of three hand pumps on the two sections of the L Shaped bar. Both had the same three ales on in the form of the breweries AK Mild, IPA and something called Quin which I hadn’t come across before. According to the pump clip it is a Peachy Juicy Golden 3.8% cask ale from their Rivertown experimental brewery section. Sounded horrible but asked for a taster and on a fine weather day it wasn’t too bad and the essence of peach is extremely light.
Not a bad example of a modern village pub that has to have a focus on food and its extremely handy for Welwyn North train station.
