We'd initially tried to visit this village local earlier in the day. But despite drinkers still being present, we were too late for 3pm last orders.

The pub re-opens for 5 evenings each week and we returned to find the door open later in the evening, as our last stop.

Unfortunately, we only paid a fleeting visit to what is a very good real ale establishment.

The 3 regular ales are Black Sheep Best Bitter, Timothy Taylor Landlord & Crouch Vale Brewer's Gold. Guests were Crouch Vale Amarillo, McMullen Country Bitter & Downlands Lamplighter, with Sandford Orchards Devon Mist cider also on handpull.

The barmaid was friendly. But the landlord didn't seem the most welcoming. Nevertheless, this was my favourite pub of our Saturday visit to Hertfordshire.

ORIGINAL REVIEW February 2010.
Set back from the lane, the Lordship is an attractive country pub.The interior is open plan, with dull furniture and is slightly over lit but ignore all that and focus on the beer.Fantastic range of real ale,all of which are kept in prime condition.Brewers Gold,TT Landlord and Black Sheep always on ,complemented by a mild and 3 guests. The grapefruit flavoured beer from Elland was terrific, and the Taiphoon from Hop Back was interesting with lemongrass .Despite being quiet, this pub has rightly won many awards for the quailty of the ale.Top marks from me .

UPDATE July 2011
Still an excellent real ale pub,the guests this time were Thornbridge Seaforth (5.9%),Castle Rock Comma and Mighty Oak Spritsail. The mild was Whitstable Dark Ruby and there were two real ciders on offer.Four of us went through the card and all ales were in absolute top form.
Originally called The Cricketers, the name was changed to The Lordship by the current owner in 1993.Aparently the local squire living in Benington Lordship was none too pleased and I assume the coat of arms on the pubsign has nothing to do with the Bott family.
Talking to the locals, who tend to pitch up towards the end of the evening session,I have to agree with them that being awarded the Runners Up position in the North Herts CAMRA pub of the year for 2011 is a bit of a slap in the face. The winner, for the third year in a row,is The Half Moon ,Hitchin a very good ale outlet but IMHO without the excellent broad range of ale styles and strengths available in The Lordship. This really is a top pub.
