This Charles Wells house is situated on a country lane and raised back and up from the road and internally it's a cosy and homely boozer with an angled bar, a mix of flagstone floor, carpet, exposed brick and dark wood. There's a section in front of the bar behind the entrance with settle-type banquette seating facing an open fireplace which was pleasingly lit on my weeknight January visit. The four-ale range included Young's Bitter, Wadworth 6X, Adnam's Southwold Bitter and CW Bombardier Gold - unimaginative, but the Adnam's was decent enough, albeit at £2 for a half. A TV tuned to Smooth FM, with the overrated Adele warbling, was the only other negative in this place which reminded me of The Crooked Billet in Little Marlow.

Attractive old country inn, smaller inside than you'd think due to the old multi-room layout. The front bar is split into two and a room at the back is used for diners. Extensive but expensive menu. Cask Marque accredited, 5 handpumps, Youngs, Courage Best, Adnams, Bombardier and 6X. Nice outside areas, located a bit off the beaten track in a country lane near the common.

train man left this review about Black Horse
Spitfire, Adnams, 6X, Dartmoor Ipa. Heading straight to the bar I hardly noticed the nice little area at the front which had great stone slabs for a floor and a wood burning fire, this was where some locals had gathered as we left, tv was on low and the area had a good chatty ambience. To the right we found some comfortable wing-back leather chairs, this section is carpetted and displayed brasses and plenty of horsey prints, beyond this to the rear was a cordoned-off dining area. Plenty of choice on the blackboard menu, mains avg £8-9.
