The Red Lion enjoys pride of place overlooking the village green in the village of Preston.

We arrived shortly after it had re-opened for its midweek evening session. A couple of other customers were already stood at the bar, along with the landlord. Two real ales were on - Tring Side Pocket For A Today & Abbeydale Fresh Hop Heathen. We'd all opted for the Abbeydale beer, until I noticed a real cider listed on a blackboard to the side of the bar. Offley Cider Tart was soon being fetched from the cellar. Apparently, they are a new local producer.

I'm not sure whether or not there were any further rooms, but the sub-divided main bar was quite cosy and unsually had the latest cricket scores listed on a blackboard high up on one wall.

A welcoming village local that deserves its CAMRA awards.

One of several Red Lions in the vicinity, this is the one with several local Camra pub of the year awards and a place among the finalists for the 2019 national pub of the year. Although the pub is, on first impression, nothing special, I found it starting to grow on me. The plain brick exterior is attractive, with two doors: one to the left in an extension added to one side of the otherwise symmetrical front and the main door in what used to be the centre. There are five hand pumps on a small bar counter which extends past the wall into the room at the back. But the front section is where the beers are - a good selection (see photo). I went for a half each of Tring Side Pocket for a Toad (an old favourite when in these parts) and the previously unknown Mighty Oak Night Walker, a 4.2% porter. All beers are poured without a sparkler, but these two produced big heads of foam in the oversized festival glasses. The porter was good, but the Side Pocket was outstanding, easily the best condition I've ever found for this beer.

The pub was busy on a Saturday lunchtime, with most people eating. The young woman behind the bar was friendly, welcoming and efficient, and the only fault I can find with this pub is the quiet background music, but that's more of a personal opinion than an actual fault. On returning to Luton on my bike, everyone I told about my visit to the Red Lion at Preston said it was a marvellous pub, so it must be true!

A true gem, this is a community owned free house with a very good reputation for both real ale and home cooked food.Entering this Georgian building from the front door ,a small bar is immediately ahead, while to the left is a carpeted lounge with farmhouse style furniture,a real fire and hop vines hanging from the central beam.To the right is a darts room with a wood burner , a couple of tables and bench seating and photos of the local cricket team who are based here.Beyond the bar, there is a charming small back lounge with a door to a good sized garden. The atmosphere is traditional with no sign of musak, fruit machines or anything else to disturb those wanting to enjoy good ale or fine food.
There are five handpumps with London Pride and Young's Bitter always on ,and three guests Adnams Old Ale,Mighty Oak Ford Prefect and a wonderful, well kept Newby Wyke's Kingston Topaz on my trip.A GBG regular as you would expect.
I didn't eat ,but there is a kitchen off the darts room, proper cooking at work here.Note that the pub closes in the afternoon at 2.30pm (Sunday 3.30pm) and food service a half hour earlier.
I wouldn't hestiate to return, this is a great country pub saved by the villagers for all to enjoy.
