A Youngs house, tucked away on a back street and very much a local pub for local people. The interior was probably two rooms given the side door but somewhere it got knocked into a single room with bench seating running around much of the interior. There are attactive mirrors with surounds hanging on the walls, and the whole effect is very traditional.Carpeted throughout, there is a bizzare mini pool table in the front section, and a gentle muzak soundtrack was playing.
The locals like their sweepstake and the friendly barmaid was giving out numbers and righty guessed that I wouldn't be around for the Sunday draw. However strangers are made welcome, and the atmosphere is calm, with no screens or fruit machines.
Three handpumps but just Youngs Original (NBSS 3.5) and Special available. Most of the regulars were drinking national keg brands.
However well kept the ale is,can the local CAMRA branch really justify it's entry in the 2022 GBG ? Pleasant enough for a quiet pint but a long session on Beford brewed "Youngs " beers would fill me with dread.

Hidden away down a side street, The Lord Nelson is every inch a very nice traditional pub,It is of course as Rex describes it as it would seem he visited a couple of weeks before me. A very comfortable pub inside,It was quiet on my visit but it was not long after opening time, I would guess It has a strong core of locals using the place. As mentioned before there was just the duo of Youngs beers on offer, Bitter and Special, once cutting edge beers to my mind they now struggle to be also ran's, It would be great if this pub could offer something a bit more interesting but this I guess is unlikely.

This is a Young's pub so we weren't surprised to find Bitter and Special on, but on our midweek afternoon visit they also had Hobgoblin on. I went for the Special, which was on good form. I didn't see a menu, but on a blackboard by the door I saw advertised steak pie or steak and kidney pudding, plus mash and peas. Haute cuisine at its best in my opinion. Prices weren't stated, but I would be very surprised if they weren't reasonable.

This is a most delightful pub. Beautifully looked after, with maritime memorabila wherever you look. I don't need to repeat what reviewers before me have described in some detail - suffice to say that little if anything is changed. When we visited on a midweek mid-afternoon there were only a handful of obvious locals in, which meant we could occupy the the seats at the front by the windows.

It's definitely worth a visit to a well kept and clearly much loved pub. OK, Young's and Hobgoblin wouldn't be everyone's choice of an ale selection, but beautiful pubs like this should be cherished and protected as they are a dying breed.
