Locals' pub close to the Hightown area of Luton. The Gardeners Call no longer serves real ale. Carlsberg, Coors, San Miguel, Fosters, John Smith's & Guinness was the choice.

The landlady seemed a bit suspicious of me as a stranger, whilst a dog also seemed to be a little curious. A Chelsea game was being shown on the TV.

Another fairly poor local pub, of which Luton seems to specialise. I was almost losing faith!

A Greene King pub according to the sign, but the range of beers is by no means limited to those manufactured in Bury St Edmunds. As well as GK IPA, Abbot and Old Speckled Hen there were Thwaites Red Devil and Timothy Taylor Golden Best available at the time of my visit. I went for the Golden Best and this was in good condition and at an average price for the town. It was very quiet in here on my Saturday afternoon visit - the Bricklayers Arms just down the road was heaving, as it always is when Luton Town are at home, but there were only two or three people in here.

The building is an unusual one, with either a flat-roofed extension to an original house, or consisting of two older buildings, one of which has lost its upper storey. The brickwork above the doorway suggests the latter is probably more likely. Inside the flat roofed part is where I settled to drink my beer. It's a room with dark stained or varnished wood panelling on the ceiling, and more on the walls to about elbow height, though this is painted a sort of rust colour, which nearly matches the cushions on the chairs. Elsewhere there is off-white gloss paint and double glass doors leading to the patio garden, so it's a light and airy room and not at all gloomy. In the other half of the building I could see a pool table, but I didn't explore further. I came here just to see if I was missing anything, having made the English Rose and Brickies my regular pre- and post-match drinking venues for many years now. Although it's pleasant enough here and the beer is ok, the short answer has to be no.
