Decent pub just along from the Spoons. 2 Mighty Oak beers on when I called, Captain Bob and Jesters. I went for the latter which was fine. Happy to have called in.

The Fox and Fiddler is a lively high street pub which can swing unpredictably between squaddie bar and decent boozer and back several times in an evening. It's an historic building and many of the older architectural features, some from the 14th Century, are on display. Of note is the front fireplace, brick built with a timber cill, surmounted by a stone frieze. There is a small, quiet garden at the back. It has been a GBG regular, and deservedly so, and is currently serving some excellent beers in superb condition. I had a pint of Mighty Oak's Flying Inn, an outstanding pint. While I can't actually warm to the pub, I have to say it's an essential part of a town crawl and worth spending time in for its beer quality alone.

This is a nice, traditional feeling pub in the centre of town. The interior is mostly dark wood beams and bare brick walls, especially around the large, unused fireplace, which had a large scene carved above it. There is a mix of sofas and normal chairs in the front room with the unusual sight of marble topped tables. The rooms further back were empty when I visited and seemed to be set up more for dining. Another fireplace was visible when I took a quick peek. There seems to be a strong connection with the military as there were all sorts of photos around the bar and beyond of local troops, as well as the obligatory Help for Heroes collection tin.
Five hand pumps dispensed Mighty Oak Oscar Wilde, English Oak and NYB11 (£2.90), Hardy and Hanson Bitter and Moorland Original. My pint of NYB11 was in reasonable condition, although not really to my taste. The barmaid was prompt in serving, but then proceeded to sit customer side of the bar with a bottle of WKD having put a load of pop tunes on the jukebox at an unreasonably loud level. As such, I was soon wishing that I'd ordered a half rather than a full pint.
I think this is a pretty decent pub that I caught at the wrong time. The beer selection means that it is probably worth a passing look at the very least.
