Thatched village pub on the main road through Totternhoe. It has just two small rooms and housed a large number of well oiled locals on our New Years Day (evening) visit. Most of the available tables were taken up by complimentary cheese boards. So, pretty much everybody was standing, making it fairly crowded.

We managed to find a small table in an old fireplace, but it wasn't the most comfortable. Greene King IPA is the regular beer here. Guests were Timothy Taylor Landlord & Adnams Broadside. I decided to give the IPA a try, after having avoided it for a few years. It was insipid, with no sign of life whatsoever and reminded me of why I normally avoid it.

Called into this pub while visiting another in the village and arrived at the same time as a bride in an open topped car. Drinks delayed a bit for photos including her pulling a keg beer behind the bar. Cask on offer were Adnams Broadside, GK IPA, and Black Sheep Bitter and the Broadside was fine. Lovely big garden.

An attractive thatched pub at the end of the village, it is perhaps a little smaller inside than one might expect, but it offers a cosy ambience and is well worth making the short detour of the A505 to get here. There is a beer garden at the back of the pub which looks as though it offers great views over rolling countryside, although it was dark when I visited so I cannot be entirely sure.

The pub consists of two rooms, a smaller bar area to the left and a lounge/dining area to the right. The lounge is quite cosy with plenty of black beams on the ceiling, and more black timberwork inlaid in to the white plastered walls. On this occasion the ceiling was liberally decorated with “snow” covered twigs and a few fairy lights, although whether this is a permanent feature or early Christmas decorations, I’m not sure. There were quarry tiles on the floor and a large stone fire-place to one side, although this had been converted in to an alcove for seating which was a shame as it could have been a degree or two warmer in there. There were a few old black and white photos on the walls, some artwork for sale and a notice saying that the fire-place dated from 1433. The bar area was broadly similar décor wise with another unused fire-place and a small TV mounted on the wall above it.

The menu offered a good selection of “pub grub” dishes such as Scampi & Chips, Chicken Tikka Masala, Burger, Steak & Kidney Pie, etc., as well as a few fish specials, and these were mostly priced around the £8 - £10 mark. I opted for the Meatballs in a Tomato sauce on a bed of pasta and served with garlic bread. This was a decent enough dish and appeared home-made. If I were being critical I’d say that a little more sauce would have been good and the meatballs could have been a little tastier, but it was decent, hearty food and about a million times better than a lasagne that I had in a pub in Towcester last week.

The solitary real ale on offer was Adnams Broadside, although there was a second pump that was unused so there may on occasions be others. There was also Greene King IPA, but unusually this appeared to be keg rather than cask. Ciders were Thatcher’s Gold, which makes a pleasant change from the usual dross you get around these parts, and Magners Golden Draught. Overall I really liked this pub with it’s traditional and cosy feel, pleasant barmaid, attractive setting and decent food, although I suppose beer aficionados may find the ale choice a little uninspiring.
