Like a moth to a flame I found myself in here yet again. My visit was on Friday afternoon last week when the misses and I couldn’t be bothered to cook dinner so we slung the kids in the car and drove to the Rodmill. We discovered why this place can get so busy and it isn’t the quality of the food, it’s the price. A mixed grill, massive burger, two large cheeseburgers, lots of chips three cokes and a pint of Fosters for just under £30. The mixed grill wasn’t made up of the choicest cuts of meat, but it was good value for money and the wife and kids thought that the burgers were very good for the price. The bar is stocked with standard draught which is well received by the football shirt wearing locals.

I still stand by my comments made back in September last year about not going in here just for a beer, but next time I can’t be bothered to cook and the gannets start chirping I’ll drive them down here again without a second thought.

I popped in here again on Saturday night just gone and found out that the Rodmill is now run by the Flaming Grill Pub Co. There was a very strong smell of grilled meat and the pub was very busy with diners. There were also lots of people waiting for tables to become free, but nobody seemed in a hurry to leave. I only visited as I was after a few games of darts, but the dartboard and other facilities have now gone to make way for more dining tables.

This place is obviously doing something right to be so busy and the food must be fairly decent to attract so many punters, but I’ll not by revisiting just for a beer again.

This is a large sprawling food led pub handily placed opposite the hospital giving an alternative to the canteen. There is plenty of parking and a few picnic tables can be found outside and some of these are covered, but the busy Kings Drive (A2021) is only a few feet away and blocked off by a wispy row of trees and hedges so the speeding traffic is quite loud. Inside the pub Directors, Harvey’s Best and London Pride were the three ale options and the Guinness was well served by a friendly young barmaid. Standard draught is also available, but most of the aging clientele in attendance during my 20:00 visit last Wednesday were on white wine or soft drinks whilst tucking into their dinners. The food is very cheap with various promotions like two meals for £9 and a cheeseburger with chips and onion rings for less than a fiver. I would normally call into question the quality of such cheap food, but it looked good and the majority of the diners knew their way around the pub so they have been before and come back for more.

Although reasonably busy the size of the pub and hoards of people eating didn’t really add to the ambience and I found this place to be a little dull. There was some harmless background music playing and the plasma screen was off when a Champions League game was airing on terrestrial television so there is obviously no interest in showing any football. There is also a dartboard and pool table along with a computerised poker table that seats four people, the likes of which I have not seen before.

Maybe this place livens up at the weekends, but I doubt it and although this isn’t a bad pub it’s not really my sort of venue so I cannot imagine a return visit in the near future.

unfortunately there has been a change in the management of this premises. t he staff running it now are young and have been known to be rude to the customers. the food is ok, especially the specials.
they have a weekly quiz night on a thursday - cash prize if you are lucky. (and that their answers match the real answers) appart from the staff - who have been know to swear at customers (even over the microphone during quizzes) and the down and out rudeness by certain members of staff (supposedly management) this is a great place to eat .... just dont take your mother as she may be offended.

The Rodmill is a busy pub opposite the Eastbourne District Hospital.

The Bar is clean and roomy, food is served and although the menus is pretty much standard the food itself appears to be reasonable.

My wife and I tried the special Fish & Chip's, priced at £2.95, on our first visits the fish was first class and so were the chip's.

The meal we were served then would beat the majority of specialist Fish & Chip restaurants in the UK irrespective of price!!

Unfortunately our visit today was not a good experience. The chips were dry and appeared to be re-heated and the fish was not of the same quality as we had before. Today's meal was barely acceptable for the price.
If at had cost £3 a complaint would have been warranted.
