Peculiar place and I was warned by a couple of people in the PoW that hours were ‘whenever he fancies opening-up’ – on my Saturday afternoon visit he was only 10 mins late compared to the advertised time. It’s a micro hidden down a side street with little obvious indication of its existence or actually being open. When you get in you might well wait an age for someone to turn up to serve you; the attendant locals are well-versed. Finally an Eeyore-esque female did manifest, though the actual owner appeared afterwards. Inside is two rooms with a red, grey and wine case papering. 6 Nations flags on the ceiling despite there being no obvious TV. An Iron Maiden pinball machine and a mix of random British Heart Foundation furniture shop seating in the rear, plus a snake in a vivarium. Kraftwerk (ace!) on the tinny speakers (not so ace). Three casks stillaged with two labelled as being on, Ludlow Gold and Tudor Skirrid, the latter of which was in decent nick for the dispense (NBSS 3). A somewhat stilted atmosphere and I very much felt like an interloper. All a little odd and notably not GBG when usually micros are a shoo-in.

Whilst it is not apparent from the outside, the Lion has yet to re-open following lockdown. Speaking to the owner, they are hoping to re-open in the not too distant future.

A two roomed micro with a very small front room with bar and a slightly larger back room. The front bar was busy on our Friday Eve visit, so it felt a bit cramped. It was also very unusual to see a large harp shaped Guinness font stuck on the front of the bar, dispensing what did look like a good pint of the black stuff. Three ales were served from the cask, at the back of the bar, which was Wye Valley HPA, Ludlow Blonde and Bullen Best Bitter. We went for the Ludlow, which was ok, but served too cold for me. The interior had a hessian cloth clad wall on the right hand side, which also featured along the front of the bar. The lighting was pendant ceiling lamps which were made from rope, dangling down with clear filament bulbs. The bar had an polished oak counter and two fonts serving Appleshed cider and Wye Valley 1985 lager.

Really enjoyed our visit to this micro-pub which is in the 2018 Good Beer Guide. There was a corner bar with 2 real ales being served direct from the cask and we enjoyed both the Ledbury Dr Rudi's Extra Pale and the Ludlow Stairway. Unobtrusive background music was playng. There are two rooms, a few tables and chairs in the front one with seating round the bar, and the rear room has a sofa.
