A curious cross between a micro, a bottle shop and a tourist trap. 'Ye Olde' is appropriate to the building but it has apparently only been a pub since 2013. As mentioned previously, there is a very small bar area on one side, still boasting 6 handpumps and a huge selection of tins and bottles from mainly Yorkshire breweries, and a slightly larger room the other side opening into the market with a further covered seating area outside. Cask beers were their own 3 house ales, brewed by Rudgate, plus guests Rudgate Vanilla Mild, Wilde Child Elaborate Definition and Roosters Easy Going Assassin, all at £4.80 apart from one. Some good beers and ok for a quick one if passing but you have to be lucky to grab a space if you are planning on staying.

Visited here twice on our short visit to York , 6 Handpulls split into 2 banks of 3 in the tiny bar area , the 3 to the right had the house beers from Rudgate , Best , Dark and a decent Tavern Stumbler , the 3 to the left had Brass Castle Bad Kitty , Treboom Avant Garde and an enjoyable Atom OHM , lots of craft cans(60+)the majority if not all from Yorkshire as are the spirits .
Friendly locals and staff .

Enjoyed our visit to this bar with it's cask beers and an array of bottles. Small bar area in the front on the Shambles street itself with an area outside at the back by the markets. Chose Brass Castle Life's a beach which was fine.

Although I liked it, to be honest it’s a bit of a mess and trying too much to be something for everyone. it’s kind of like an old style tea room with an attached micropub/bar and alfresco seating on the market. I suppose you can’t expect too much in such a tourist trap of a location but it isn’t too bad and the bar should be cosy enough on an evening.

I must admit that I didn't take to this place at all. There's a neat front bar with 4 real ales available. The staff were friendly enough if a little standoffish. There's a further small room to the rear that is like sitting in your granny's front room and an outside seating area overlooking the market. My pint was in good nick and was Ms CAMRAs half of a different beer. All the other people in the room were eating, so it smelt a bit like a chip shop as they all had chips with their meals. As we left Ms CAMRA said "We don't need to bother with that one again". I agree with her.

In my opinion less of a pub and more of an off license for overpriced Yorkshire bottled ales with the added appeal of some cask ale that can be drank on the premises. This is a conversion from an old coffee and gift shop and in many ways still feels like that even though things have been reworked to try and make it seem old and authentic. There is a single square room upstairs with a few tables and chairs from which you must carry your beer up and another area outside, I believe food is also offered.

All beer is ordered at the downstairs from shop counter style set up (adding to the loss of pub feel) and there are four ales offered with two being permanrnt house beers mad by the Rudgate brewery (Shambels stumbler and Shambels dark witht he former coming in at an expected touristy £3.50). there were also guest beers from half moon (Blonde) and Yorkshire Heart (light heart pale ale).I opted for the wobbler and found it to be a nicely kept pint.

All in all this if far too touristy for me and not the sort of place to go for a session but could fill its purpose if ever with visitors to the city to say yoy stopped for a beer on the Shambels.

There were four real ales on at the time of my visit, spread around the small bar in the small front room, with one of them duplicated on a small section of bar through the door in the back room. This was their house beer, Shambles Tavern Stumbler, which despite its name is a 3.8% session beer. Like the other house beer, Shambles Dark, it is brewed by Rudgate. The others available at the time of my visit were Brass Catle Session IPA 3.5% and Roosters Londinium 5.5%. It was quite busy when I was here, so perhaps they didn't have time to offer me any cheese sandwiches and crisps.

I never thought i would see a pub open on the shambles, but one has opened,The Ye Old Shambles Tavern.
Once inside there is a small room to the front which has a the bar to the rear right, this room is more of a bottle shop, but there are two handpumps on the bar, there is a separate room to the rear which is carpeted and has normal tables and chairs and one leather settee for seating.
I had a drink of Rudgate Ruby mild which went down very well, the other beer was called Shambles bitter.
I had my half in the back room and was then given two small cheese sandwiches with crisps,i said i was only having an half but was still given them which i thought was a really nice gesture.
Quiet background music was playing which was jazz type.
I quite liked this small pub and i gave a couple of pounds to the staff tip plate for the sandwiches.

This almost belongs in the category of a micropub and probably would be if it wasn't for the upstairs overspill room. The front area is a combination of a bottle shop and café with the drinking room being a small area situated to the rear with views of the market behind. This carpeted room has a beamed ceiling, red walls with blackened timber posts and unusual décor including a plastic cow's head, a meat cleaver, saw and a metal bucket.
Two handpumps are located in the shop area at the front, on this occasion Rudgate Mild and Great Yorkshire Brewery Yorkshire Blackout. The free little plate containing a couple of small cheese sandwiches and a handful of crisps was a new one on me, perhaps the Yorkshire equivalent of tapas, it was gratefully received. Should you need further sustenance, meals are available, a board offered Cumberland sausage, mash, green beans and onion gravy for just £6.95. An excellent find, busy inside as it is small and located on the touristy Shambles but if you can squeeze in and get a seat well worth the effort.

Cannot add much of real value to the 2 previous reviews apart from on my visit the room at the rear was quite empty, and although i only purchased a half of real ale i still received the complimentary plate of crisps and cheese sandwich from the amicable landlady.
