Reinvented yet again since Blackthorn’s latest review, it has been given a rather garish hippy-esque makeover outside and is more of a sports bar-cum-youth club inside now, although the interior décor and layout haven’t changed much. There is a fair sized paved terrace at the front with plenty of covered seating, but the traffic noise and lack of a pleasant view make it less desirable to sit there. The interior now includes two pool tables and a dartboard, plus several huge TV screens which were switched off when we visited. The music was excessively loud, made worse by the echo resulting from near emptiness. The young staff were friendly enough. Two handpumps on the bar, but neither was working. That left a choice of Sharp’s Atlantic and Blue Moon plus Guinness, Staropramen, Inche’s Cider, Moretti and several Thatchers. It didn’t do it for me.

Blackthorn _ left this review about The GPT Smokehouse

A fairly traditional looking pub that’s located in a somewhat uninspiring location on a main road, it’s only a five or ten minute walk from the city centre but is nonetheless that it’s sufficiently out on a limb that it’s not going to benefit from any of Bath’s tourist trade, or come to that, much of any other trade going on our recent Saturday evening visit. That said, we were there quite early, it may of course liven up later on. Formerly called the Green Park Tavern, it has now reinvented itself with more of an emphasis on food.

Internally, the pub consists of one main L-shape room, with a smaller room off to one side. Sanded wooden boards are on the floor, white wood panelling on the ceiling and pale blue wood panelling on the lower part of the walls with white plasterwork above. A few artistic black and white photos were dotted around and there were some old leather sofas at the front of the pub. Seating was a mixture of colourful plastic chairs and colourful metal stools, whilst many of the tables had been fashioned from old metal advertising hoardings. Some exposed brick was around in places such as supporting pillars and the bar counter, although this all looked rather fake I thought.

The food menu offered a good selection of burgers as well as ribs, barbequed chicken and so on. Prices were a little above the norm for pub grub, with most of the main courses being in the £10 - £15 range. My GPT Smokehouse dirty burger with American cheese, smoked bacon, skinny fries, aioli and house slaw was actually very good indeed – a generous portion and very tasty, although of course at £13.50 you could argue that it should be pretty good. A southern fried chicken burger on the other side of the table was also well received.

Beers on tap were Gem and Butcombe, whilst a third pump appeared unused. Ciders meanwhile were Aspall’s Suffolk, Thatcher’s Gold and Orchard Pig Reveller. Overall, I’ve mixed feelings about this. The food was great, and the service of the lone barmaid who was actually serving was very good, although she could have done with some help. On the other hand, I really just didn’t warm to the style of the place. It’s difficult to put my finger on, but it some ways it felt more like a café than a pub. It’s not somewhere I’m likely to pop back to just for a pint.
