Rural pub in the small village of Grosmont near to the English border that also has a well preserved castle nearby, which is well worth a visit.

We were first through the door of the Angel and were greeted with 4 clipped handpulls. Wye Valley Butty Bach is the regular beer and was popular with most of the customers who came in after us. Wye HPA was also on, along with Kingstone Llandogo Trow Ale & Tomos Watkin Cwrw Haf.

As you enter, the bar is off to the left, with a dining area to the right. Items on the walls include a pub sign for a pub called The Daffodil, a number of guitars and old posters for music festivals. There is a large animal's head above the bar. Live music events at the pub were also advertised. Toilets are outside to the side of the pub and there are also a few bench tables to the front next to the small parking area.

The landlady was quite amiable. She was being supported by a couple of young barmaids. This was a decent start to our Sunday tour of Monmouthshire pubs.

The Angel Inn is a community pub in every sense of the word. When the pub was in danger of closing, a group of locals clubbed together to buy the pub, that in itself is a testement to the essence of The Angel, and to community spirit in general The furnishings are simple, but the interior is adorned with musical instruments and posters of music events from a bygone era. The staff are friendly and helpful, which is also a bonus. The Angel also has the distinction of being situated a stones throw away from Grosmont Castle, a very picturesque ruin. Pubs like these, are in danger of being lost forever without the support of the general public.

If you're in this area, "with a gasper on" this is a perfect pub for a quiet pint and a nibble.
